We all deserve to feel safe being our authentic selves. Unfortunately, that’s not always the case for LGBTQ+ folks. In countries across the world, discrimination, prosecution, and cultural beliefs put LGBTQ+ lives at risk. That’s where Rainbow Railroad comes in.
Inspired by America’s infamous Underground Railroad, Rainbow Railroad helps at-risk LGBTQ+ folks get to safety. Rainbow Railroad reached out to Tagg with the goal of informing more LGBTQ+ women just how easy — and impactful — volunteering with Rainbow Railroad can be.
I worked with Rainbow Railroad representatives to create three different stories that helped achieve this goal.
The first told the story of a woman who fled Jamaica for safety with the help of Rainbow Railroad. The article truly focused on her story and covertly drove home the impact of volunteering.
Our second article explored a church whose congregation decided to make their big outreach project supporting LGBTQ+ refugees coming into the States via Rainbow Railroad. In this way, we showed readers that volunteering could be a communal decision and one that required less time than they might initially think.
The third story investigated the ways that LGBTQ+ folks get left behind during relocation, whether that be leaving an unsafe home country or coming into a new “safe” country. Rainbow Railroad representatives served as experts, explaining how difficult the process of helping someone get to safety can actually be. Their words drove home the importance of volunteering.
